The McLaren-Mercedes cars competing in the Formula 1 Championship this year including the McLaren MP4-24 continues to catch everyone’s attention not because of their speed or their looks but because they are the only cars equipped with KERS or the kinetic recovery system in every racing event. The system adds more power to the racers specifically a 60kW power, the benefits of which have not yet been confirmed in the race.
The KER systems were developed by engineers from McLaren-Mercedes apparently with the racing autos in mind since a source said the KERS system is not yet relevant for road cars. Two KER systems have been developed the first one with a mechanical unit that makes use of a flywheel for storing power and the second one with an electric system that makes use of batteries or capacitors. McLaren managing director Anthony Sheriff said it is important to note that the auto manufacturer is pushing the battery technology to its limits.
The McLaren MP4-24 has tires that are slick and small and with reduced aerodynamics. The McLaren MP4-24 will be driven by Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton, It took more than 18 months to be developed and appears well-developed enough to take on its competitors in the race.
